Built-in Tasmania by Tasmanians to benefit Tasmanians.
TASRAIL'S new, federally funded shiploader at the Port of Burnie is the only multi-user shiploader of its kind in the state, as was its predecessor. It is connected to the West Coast rail and road network via its Bulk Minerals Export Facility (BMEF), which is used for on-port storage of minerals before being ship-loaded for export. The original shiploader, built in 1969, was approaching the end of its economic life when the Australian government committed to funding its replacement. TasRail CEO Steven Dietrich said that it had been a massive three years for the business since the contract was awarded in August 2021. "After an extensive procurement process, heavily complicated by COVID-19 shutdowns and supply chain challenges, TasRail was very pleased to award a design and construct contract to Tasmanian firm COVA Haywards in August 2021," Mr Dietrich said. Design work commenced immediately. Mr Dietrich said that TasRail was proud to have facilitated this $64 million project for the Tasmanian mining industry.
